5 people die in South Texas pursuit crash involving undocumented immigrants

The crash Sunday morning on Highway 85 in Big Wells was the result of a chase that involved Border Patrol agents and Dimmit County deputies.

According to the sheriff's office, four individuals died on scene and one later died in the hospital.

Boyd said the driver of the Suburban was also injured and was flown to a San Antonio hospital.

An SUV carrying 14 people rolled over and ejected 12 people who are believed to be illegal immigrants, according to a report from News4SanAntonio.

Boyd said the vehicle, traveling around 100 miles per hour, ran off the road and struck gravel, tried to overcorrect, then rolled over on the highway.

The incident started after a Border Patrol agent in Carrizo Springs suspected smuggling when he saw a trio of vehicles pass him on a rural highway, US Customs and Border Protection said.

Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles (144.83 kilometers) northeast.

"The Border Patrol was pursuing a vehicle and one of my deputies assisted in the pursuit, and took over the pursuit just west of Big Wells", Mr. Boyd told KSAT-12.

In a later interview, Boyd said the vehicle reached 100 miles per hour before the driver lost control and crashed.

"We've seen this many, many times, in not only this county but other counties along the border".

Boyd said there needs to be a wall built because this is a "real problem" in the area.

Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd told the outlet another five passengers were rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center for emergency care. "It's a problem. This is, I think, a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure".
