Meteorologists are calling Alberto a 'subtropical storm.' What the heck is that?

The storm, coming on the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, was expected to scramble holiday travel on Monday.

The counterclockwise spin of Alberto and the clockwise rotation of a high-pressure system in the Atlantic are combining to bring moisture northward into the Triangle, said Kathleen Carroll, a meteorologist at the weather service office in Raleigh. The Florida panhandle, a good portion of Alabama and western Georgia are dramatically more at risk for flash flooding with this storm.

As of 7 a.m., subtropical storm Alberto was about 100 miles south-southeast of Destin, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for small barrier islands in one northern Florida county, and voluntary evacuations were issued for another.

But all three needed enough gas to get to the finish line, and it was Power who was frantically chasing them down. It just didn't come on race day. "I can't believe it!" he screamed in the winner's circle.

While Alberto nears the shore, the warning area has been scaled back from the Suwannee River back west to the Florida-Alabama state line.

"On the forecast track, the center of Alberto will move over the northern Gulf of Mexico tonight and cross the northern Gulf Coast in the warning area on Monday", the center said. Through Monday, it is expected to slowly migrate toward land, so the odds of rain with gusty winds will increase by Monday afternoon and evening.

Forecasters say heavy rains from Subtropical Storm Alberto could cause flooding across most of SC. No tornadoes were reported Sunday, however, in the Florida Peninsula. It's moving north at 14 miles per hour (22 kph), and has top sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph).

As the Gulf Coast endures the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, the Carolinas will need to keep an eye out for heavy rain and flooding this week. "So how often can you say you rode a storm out?"

Alberto had picked up strength as it headed north through the Gulf of Mexico, bringing with it the warning of life-threatening inundation, said the Miami-based NHC.

This would mean the storm would become more compact around its centre, with the strongest winds and rain located here. He said Alberto's biggest threat will be its heavy rains, with forecasts of anywhere from four to 12 inches (10-30 centimeters) of rain in some areas. Overnight lows will be in the low 70s.

Heavy rain has already fallen in southern states, and flood and flash-flood watches span the region, reaching as far north as North Carolina and Tennessee, the National Weather Service said.

Florida, Alabama and MS were under states of emergency, while two Florida counties issued mandatory evacuation orders.

The first named storm of the season, Subtropical Storm Alberto, is expected to make landfall Monday along the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.
