Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old British toddler whose grave illness drew worldwide attention, died early on Saturday, his family said.

There were emotional scenes as supporters of all ages gathered in a park near to Alder Hey Children's Hospital - where Alfie had received treatment. We understand the last few months have been hard for them.

His story also featured heavily in news bulletins and on websites around the world.

"My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30 absolutely heartbroken", the boy's father Tom Evans wrote on Facebook.

To announce his death, his parents shared the news on their Facebook page, writing; "Our baby grew his wings tonight at 2:30am (0130 GMT)".

Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool took Alfie off life support on Monday with the permission of the UK's High Court.

On Wednesday, the British Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that took away care and sustenance from the toddler and prevented his parents from seeking treatment elsewhere.

The incident itself has caused incredible amounts of public outrage and campaigning for better treatment, with the hospital staff reportedly shocked after countless acts of abuse towards them. British protesters clashed with police as they tried to force their way into the hospital, and local police issued a warning after staff were allegedly harassed, saying social media posts were being monitored.

Archbishop of Liverpool, Malcolm McMahon, referred to the heated arguments taking place in a statement he made on behalf of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.
