With the backing of President Trump, former Republican state senator Debbie Lesko won a special election Tuesday to fill a House seat vacated by Rep. Trent Franks, who resigned past year amid accusations of sexual misconduct.

Ms. Lesko, a state senator, was declared the victor by the Associated Press late Tuesday night.

Republicans won a special congressional election Tuesday in the suburbs west of Phoenix, CNN projects, holding on in a reliably red district where Democrats launched a well-organized but long-shot bid to flip the seat.

Republican Debbie Lesko has won the special election in Arizona's 8th Congressional District, keeping the U.S. House seat in GOP control.

"We'd really like a change", he said.

France 'has proof' Syria used chlorine
Macron has long called the use of chemical weapons in Syria a "red line" that would trigger French retaliation. France says it can prove the Syrian government used chemical weapons against civilians last weekend.

Democrats had been confident before the election, following surprise wins in congressional contests in Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin and elsewhere. "Jeff Flake's open seat" in November.

Republican donor Dan Eberhart said in an email that Lesko's win means that while the Republican brand can still win House seats this cycle, there is little room for error. In 2016, Franks won with more than 68 percent of the total vote, and President Donald Trump carried the district by 21 points.

"Debbie is a strong conservative whose values truly reflect those of the voters in Arizona's Eighth District", NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said in a statement Tuesday night. They touted the fact that Tipirneni kept it close in a district where Democrats didn't even put up a candidate in 2014 and 2016, and they argued the slim margin shows their message is resonating in the era of Trump. Meanwhile, Democratic groups largely stayed on the sidelines, though Tipirneni outraised Lesko overall.

As a candidate, Tipirneni outraised Lesko by nearly $200,000.

The late announcement tracks with what the party did during races in Alabama and Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins Matchup 4/20/18
Bryan Rust beat Neuvirth with a wrap around 12 minutes into the second for his ninth career goal in a potential elimination game. Just like two seasons ago, Neuvirth is giving the Flyers the best chance to win in the clutch, in the big games.

Trump's first comment on the race came in early April through a Republican National Committee robocall to persuadable voters. She was endorsed by former Arizona Rep. And Republicans nationally should resist the temptation to gloat over a win that should have been much bigger and easier than this.

Baird said Lesko had successfully fought to make golf carts street legal in Sun City, a move that has made life easier for older people who have health limitations that make driving larger vehicles impossible. The Democratic National Committee, like the RNC, sent in staff.

In the days leading up to the election, members of the state's Democratic party told ThinkProgress that they considered her campaign as both a success as well a good sign for the upcoming midterms, regardless of the outcome. "We can't have that", Trump says in the call, a recording of which was obtained by CNN, that went out to voters on April 6. She supports a adding a public option to the Affordable Care Act and told ThinkProgress she supports a number of gun reforms, including expanding background checks and banning bump stocks and assault-style weapons.

Amid French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit, President Trump found time to urge voters to back Lesko.
