France 'has proof' Syria used chlorine

Activists, local rescuers and rebels in Syria claim that Syrian forces used chlorine gas in the attack on April 7 against Douma, in the rebel-held area near Damascus.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany will not participate in possible military action in Syria, but supports sending a message that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable.

Breaking with the previous administration's policy which set the Syrian president's departure as a pre-condition to resolve the conflict, Macron had previously expressed willingness to speak with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the seven-year conflict.

He did not give the source of his proof but it was assumed that France's respected military and external intelligence services had gathered the evidence.

Macron has long called the use of chemical weapons in Syria a "red line" that would trigger French retaliation. While it was unclear how the U.S. would make Syria and its allies "pay a price" for civilian deaths, Trump's statement indicated that he held Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for the attack for his association with Syria.

"Of course, the chemical attack is what pushed us to agree" to a withdrawal from Douma, said high-ranking Jaish al-Islam member Yasser Dalwan.
