Uber is not just for hailing rides anymore

And in eight cities in the U.S., Uber users will be able to rent a vehicle from Getaround, a rental startup, right in the app.

Since its founding in 2009, Uber has expanded rapidly.

Uber is partnering with a variety of companies to offer rental cars and shared bikes in its app, adding more options to the company's signature on-demand rides.

While Jump bikes are not yet regulated, the electric-pedal company received exclusive permission from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) to kickstart service in the city.

The group has grown to about 40,000 members since it was organized following a strike in West Virginia in early March. Supporters of the bill said the changes are necessary to save the state's pension systems.

In addition to Wednesday's expansion of the bike sharing integration to D.C. from San Francisco, Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also promised on a visit to the District that it would share some more data with certain cities it operates in. "We share numerous same goals as the 600 cities we serve, and are committed to addressing the same challenges: Reducing individual auto ownership, expanding transportation access and helping governments plan future transportation investments". Within the year, riders will be able to buy and use tickets from within Uber's app, too.

Uber has also been blamed for steering people away from mass transit and into Uber operated vehicles, further increasing traffic woes. Upon completion, users can then lock the bike to any public rack in the designated zone shown on the app's map.

The platform launched in January, though those who wanted to use the Uber Bike by Jump service were required to join a waitlist.

Another partnership is with on-demand vehicle rental service Getaround.

Thirty, including 27 children, killed as school bus plunges into gorge
India has the world's deadliest roads, with nearly 150,000 people killed in accidents in 2015, the latest government data shows. Nine children were killed in February when a vehicle crashed into them outside their school in an apparent hit-and-run.

San Francisco-based Getaround lets users find and instantly book vehicles from private auto owners, all through a mobile app. You'll be able to get an Uber. Last June, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera released information for the first time about the number of Uber and Lyft drivers estimated that 45,000 are working in the city. "Now you can take a bike to rent your vehicle and go buy groceries". It is also partnering with Masabi, a public transit ticketing company, so that commuters can book rides on buses and trains using the Uber app.

"We're excited to begin our next chapter and to play a significant part in the transition of Uber to a multi-modal platform", he said in a statement.

The new Uber driver app will be available for driver partners in Kochi and courier partners in Chennai in India before being rolled out to other cities in a phased manner.
