Thirty, including 27 children, killed as school bus plunges into gorge

The bus, the authorities said, was carrying elementary school students from a private school in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Himalayas when it swerved and fell hundreds of feet into a deep ravine around 3:15 p.m. A convoy of cars and bicycles made up of passers-by rushed to bring injured students to a nearby hospital before ambulances arrived at the scene near the town of Nurpur.

At least 27 children, some as young as 4 years old, were killed Monday when their school bus skidded off a mountain road into a gorge in the foothills of the Himalayas, officials said.

"My first priority was to save lives".

An investigation has been launched after 27 people, majority children, died when a school bus fell into a gorge in a mountainous region of India.

Police said that all the dead students, 13 boys and 10 girls, were below the age of 11.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has announced Rs 5 lakh for each of the families of the deceased and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Nine children were killed in February when a vehicle crashed into them outside their school in an apparent hit-and-run. The bus belonged to Vazir Ram Singh Memorial Public School.
