U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are expected to meet before the end of May to talk about denuclearizing the regime.

"It's likely that Kim Jongun comes with an alternate significance in mind", Abraham Denmark, a former senior US defense official claimed, noting a possible denuclearization deal seems to be contingent on the USA generating the most suitable conditions.

US and North Korean officials have reportedly been hashing out terms of the agreement through back channels led by CIA Director Mike Pompeo - Trump's nominee to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Both sides have met several times in a third country to determine a location for the historic summit, U.S. officials told CNN.

CNN quoted USA officials as saying that the summit will be held at the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar - a proposal that North Korea has already relayed to the U.S., according Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

The confirmation offers the USA greater assurances that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is committed to a potential meeting with U.S. president Donald Trump by the end of next month.

The talks between intelligence officials are laying the groundwork for a meeting between Pompeo and his North Korea counterpart, the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, in advance of the leaders' summit.

North Korea has confirmed directly to the Trump administration that it is willing to negotiate with the United States over potential denuclearisation, administration officials said.

Trump has threatened to withdraw the United States from an accord between Tehran and six world powers, signed in 2015 before he took office, unless France, Britain and Germany help to agree a follow-up pact by that date.

Working-level officials need to determine how Kim would arrive at the southern side of the border village for the summit.
