"Unfortunately, they found the area where the water heater was letting gas escape, perhaps because of a lack of maintenance, perhaps because it was in use, perhaps because of the age of the equipment", prosecutor Miguel Angel Pech told the Radio Formula station. The Sharps were supporters of the Creston, Iowa-based school. The office said investigators "carried out a physical investigation of the gas connections in the room", and the civil defense office of Tulum would issue a technical report on the findings. More than 300 people attended, according to the Creston News Advertiser.

The family was scheduled to come back to the USA on Wednesday, March 21.

The developer of the condo complex where the deaths occurred declined to comment Friday.

The relatives waited for the last flight from Cancun to St. Louis to arrive on Thursday in case the Sharps had chose to stay an extra day, Weland told ABC News.

The family was expected to return home last Wednesday from a seven-day spring break vacation to Tulum, Mexico, a small coastal town on the Yucatán Peninsula, southwest of Cancún.
