Thousands gather for 'March For Our Lives' event in Washington, DC

Valery Lenti, a student from South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, just a few miles from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, is raising money through a GoFundMe account to get students at her school to Washington, D.C.

Pima County Sheriff deputies have seen a surge in threats against schools since the Parkland shooting, which took place February 14.

"We already think that the gun laws in this state are strict as they are, and we don't want them going any further", said Mike Moura, spokesman for the Boston-based Resist Marxism group.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat who represents New Jersey's 5th Congressional District, says that he will join the student-led demonstrations on Saturday.

According to the press release, speakers will include MSD students that survived the shootings, as well as those who met with local and national lawmakers.

"Students, college students, high school students, probably elementary school students, parents, grandparents and just anybody who cares about this issue will be here", said Jessica Tefft, one of the Winston-Salem march organizers. The Walkout was also to protest the inaction on Congress' part to address gun violence that would keep school children safe.

The protesters, many of them high school students, claim that the youth leadership of this initiative is what will set it apart from previous attempts to enact stronger gun-control legislation.

As many as 500,000 people are expected to rally in the nation's capital starting at noon.

In the aftermath of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Laatsch has a heightened awareness of school safety and gun control, especially in relation to assault rifles.

"We are the change".

"A bunch of my teachers in my classes had to sit down with us and talk about what we would have to do in case there was a shooting", Dey said. "I'm concerned about gun laws".

"It's really important. This is the next generation coming up". But now recently, there has been so many shootings that I am a little bit nervous.

"Give them and their friends a ride to the march this Saturday".

"We really wanted to make sure that we highlighted and uplifted the student voices, because numerous events in San Diego are often organized by community organizations", he said.
