Amazon.com has looked at the possibility of expanding its retail footprint by acquiring some locations from bankrupt Toys R Us, according to insiders.

"My assumption is that there's about half a billion dollars worth of toys that have been produced for Toys "R" Us with no place to go", Kassoff explained.

The company's distribution centers, which supply the stores, will close before the stores do, said Bill Kosturos, vice chairman of USA restructuring for Alvarez & Marsal, one of the companies advising Toys R Us in the liquidation.

Last week, Toys "R" Us announced it had begun the process of shuttering its 700-plus remaining U.S. stores, leaving a number of analysts and toymakers questioning the long-term fate of the industry. What do you think of Toys "R" Us closing its doors? Its Canadian unit is up for sale, along with its operations around the world. Larian has said that his group is also doing due diligence on the US stores, and hopes to keep some of them open.

Charles Tatelbaum, a bankruptcy lawyer with more than 50 years of industry experience, isn't as optimistic about the buyout options for its US operation. "Walmart and Target both have their own brand recognition, so they won't buy it. [Toys "R" Us] also never has any proprietary toys or intellectual property that would appeal to established retailers", Tatelbaum told Observer.

Bloomberg speculates that the retail space could be used to display popular Amazon products, such as the Echo.
