Oculus Rift VR headsets defeated by runtime service issue

Reports are coming in that Oculus Rift headsets across the world have stopped working as the device can not connect to the "Oculus Runtime Service". The file in question is called OculusAppFramework.dll and this will need updating in order for the software, and headset to work again.

Yesterday, they announced problems with the Nvidia driver updates that were effecting VR users.

Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell confirmed on Twitter that there was an issue affecting the company's Rift headset. As of writing, it seems that you can only rely on a bit of peer support in the community forums (linked below). "Not Oculus", writes one angry user.

PCMag encountered the same error trying to run an Oculus Rift in NY. System software couldn't "reach Oculus Runtime Service" according to error messages posted to the Oculus forums, spotted by Polygon.

The Oculus Rift has been selling particularly well over the last few months, but unfortunately it looks like users are starting to run into issues.

"For security, we use a certificate to ensure that the software you receive actually comes from Oculus", Oculus says. I tried deleting and then reinstalling the Oculus software and it's not fixed the issue. This issue is a bummer to gamers that aren't going to get to play the titles they've purchased until the issue is resolved, but it's a much less forgivable issue for commercial users who use the headset.
