A bathrobe-wearing Harvey Weinstein statue appeared Thursday within close proximity of the venue where Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place.

Ginger-the artist behind the naked Donald Trump statues that made waves in 2016-then explained where the idea of posing Weinstein on the couch came from.

It depicts a life-size Weinstein, clad in a bathrobe, sitting on a golden-colored couch and holding an Oscar statue.

Rain on Sunday, milder through week
Some storms this afternoon have already been strong to severe with gusty winds and heavy rain being the biggest concern. The second half of Monday and first half of Tuesday are expected to remain dry as a cold front pushes to the coast.

The golden statue, called "Casting Couch", features a man that looks an very bad lot like Weinstein wearing a bathrobe.

The Oscars are held on Monday (NZ time). "I chose the piece "Casting Couch" to do this year because I think a lot of people thought the casting couch was a thing of the past, of the '20s and '30s and '40s in Hollywood but clearly until recently, and even now, it is still alive and well", said Plastic Jesus, formerly a London-based photographer.

While it's unclear how long the statue will remain on the street - or if it will still be there on Oscar Sunday - the artists say the installation took two months, which including making a cast from "a similar-sized friend" and molding "the face to match Weinstein's bloated, unshaven appearance", the artists wrote on Instagram.

Plastic Jesus, whose real name is unknown, told The Hollywood Reporter that the Weinstein piece, which took two months to make, was meant to be interactive and allow passersby to sit next to Weinstein. "Hopefully now in the light of recent allegations against many leading figures in Hollywood the industry will clean up it's (sic) act". Weinstein has since apologized and plans to "do right" by those he has hurt.
