Transgender Texas wrestler wins second high school title amid controversy

The 18-year-old wrestler from Euless Trinity High School is in the middle of transitioning from a woman to a man, but still competes in wrestling competitions with females.

His mother, Angela McNew, added: "He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles". "People think Mack has been beating up on girls".

"You put me in front of anybody and I'll wrestle them", he said.

Beggs has request a number of times to compete in the boys division but has been denied. However, he completes in the girl's division because Texas public high schools require athletes to go by the sex on their birth certificate.

"It's a statement to other kids that you can do this, and that you can do anything you want to do", she said. "All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid and we should change the policies to conform to other people in my position".

Beggs wants to wrestle in the NCAA and is entertaining a scholarship offer from an out of state school.

Texas laws ban performance enhancing drugs for high school athletes, but there is an exception if it is taken for medical purposes.

Beggs has compiled a 132-9 record over the last three seasons, and hasn't lost a match in the past two years.

Despite all the backlash, Beggs entered the ring and capped a flawless 36-0 season.

Beggs also told the Morning News that he knows he's a champion and that he worked tirelessly to achieve his consecutive state titles.
