Ferry blast injures 18 passengers in Mexican Caribbean

The Director of Civil Protection in Playa del Carmen said two Americans and three Canadians were injured in the blast.

A ferry was in the midst of unloading passengers on a dock in the Mexican town of Playa del Carmen Wednesday when it suddenly exploded, injuring up to 25 people, according to a report.

Among the people involved was Rebecca Lahlum and her 14-year-old son John Lahlum from Valley City.

A Pakistani cultural troupe performed at the occasion along with their counterparts from partner TAPI countries. He said the implementation of the TAPI project was the "biggest achievement for the countries involved".

The family said the boys were cut and bruised but are recovering.

The local government said in a press release no deaths were reported and that the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Their parents were not hurt.

Police in Quintana Roo say the victims were taken into care in various hospitals.

They were charged in October a year ago with money laundering, conspiracy and other offences in federal court in Washington . The other charges in this case were filed in Washington , D.C., in a 12-count indictment in October .

The blast sent a fireball and debris flying from the ferry as it was tied to the dock. The ferry's route was from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel.

The initial investigation has revealed the explosion was caused by a mechanical failure, according to Quintana Roo officials.

The Barcos Caribe vessel, in which the explosion took place, was left with a gaping hole in its starboard side, right next to a passenger seating area.
