Met Office issues yellow warning for snow in Lincolnshire

It says it will be very cold on Monday night with a severe frost and the risk of snow showers along northern and eastern coasts in moderate northeasterly winds.

However, there will be a few patches of mist and drizzle - especially in the south and south-west of the country.

It will be a case of keeping the woolly hats and scarves on standby, with Met Eireann warning that there could be heavy snowfall with temperatures expected to drop as low as -4C.

"There is a very big, very cold pool of air that circulates around the North Pole - sudden stratospheric warming, as it says on the tin, is when the stratosphere suddenly warms", he said.

According to forecasters, the coldest spell is now expected between February 26 and March 4.

The Met Office website reads: "Showers or longer periods of snow will affect eastern parts of the United Kingdom during Tuesday".

The national forecaster warned of potential disruptions to power lines, roads, railroads and even cuts to mobile phone services. Some areas will see snow fall but this won't be as significant as that seen in Eastern counties. The most likely time for a period of more widespread snow now looks to be during Tuesday morning.

"Where this occurs there is the potential for accumulations of five to 10cm locally whilst nearby locations may see much less frequent showers and only small accumulations of zero to two cm in places".

Tomorrow, Saturday will be dry with bright and sunny spells. After a largely sunny Sunday, isolated snow showers spread west overnight. There will be some further sleet and snow, but it doesn't look to be extensive.
