Long Island weather: Up to 7 inches of snow possible this weekend

"We are about to enter the coldest period in over a year (since December 2016 at least), with massive snow in the mountains and lowland snow in "favored" areas such as Northwest Washington and the northern slopes of the Olympics".

Another round of snow is expected throughout the region Friday night and in the Billing area through the weekend, the National Weather Service said. The snow may mix with some rain Saturday afternoon.

During the approaching storm, the weather service is urging the public to "Plan on hard travel conditions". If you do need to travel Saturday night or very early Sunday be aware that roads will be slippery before the crews have a chance to work on them. The exact track of the storm will determine exactly who sees the highest amounts, but as of this morning, computer models are still honing in on southern New England as the location of the higher amounts. A pretty small range - but included in those seven measly degrees is a huge range of potential weather conditions, from snow to sleet to freezing rain to rain. Isolated power outages could be possible due to the weight of the snow.

France will strike Syria if chemical weapons use proven
On-the-ground observers reported last month that Syrian forces were deploying chlorine gas during air strikes on rebel positions. The Syrian government strongly denies using chemical weapons and says it does not target civilians.

Wet snow is expected in accumulations of up to an inch.

Sunday will be bright and sunny - and with temperatures in the 40s, things will be melting fast. Winds could gust over 40 miles per hour in some spots at the coast and near water along the Sound with wind gusts in the 30-40 miles per hour range elsewhere. The highest totals will shift further inland to central and western MA and parts of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Saturday afternoon: Snow likely, mainly after 5 p.m. "During the day Saturday, I would not be at all surprised to see it transition completely to rain for awhile".

As that front drives in a brisk northwest wind (gusting over 25 mph), colder air will begin flowing into the Garden State. Closer to the Maryland / Pennsylvania border, three to four inches is expected, while the western highlands in the Maryland panhandle and West Virginia could pick up three to six inches of snow. That means interior New Jersey will probably experience a quick "thumping" of heavy snow accumulation.

For Sunday, expect sunny skies, with a high near 46.
