Two Ohio police officers killed in afternoon shooting, suspect in custody

Two Ohio police officers responding to a 911 hang-up call were fatally shot on Saturday after entering an apartment in a Columbus suburb and a suspect was taken into custody, authorities said.

One officer died on the scene and one died at the hospital, the chief said.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), who claims Westerville as his home town, also posted his condolences on Twitter.

The shooting happened just before 1 the 300 block of Crosswind Drive.

No additional information about the suspect or the incident to which police responded were immediately available.

"We are deeply saddened to report that one of our officers has been killed in the line of duty", the city government of Westerville tweeted.

Morbitzer, who struggled to hold back tears, described both officers as "true American heroes" who were "always willing to go above and beyond to help out new recruits".

"My thoughts and prayers are with the two police officers, their families, and everybody at the @WestervillePD", he wrote.
