Senator Whitehouse: Trump Military Parade Will Remind People of North Korea

He raised the idea at the start of a meeting in NY with French President Emmanuel Macron, as he gushed about the Bastille Day military parade in Paris that Trump attended in July as Macron's guest.

DC leaders are pushing back hard tonight against President Trump's plans for a grand military parade through the city.

The parade is believed to include Abrams tanks, fighting vehicles, missiles, and other high-tech military equipment rolling through Washington DC.

United States media report that Veterans Day on November 11th or Independence Day on July 4th are possible dates for the parade.

But as The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, Trump was not exaggerating his commitment.

A few Senate Republicans suggested Trump should time his parade to the celebrations which already occur on Veterans Day, officially observed on November 11.

Pence's visit to the Olympic Games is also meant to continue the United States' pressure campaign on North Korea. Pence said his message, if he met any officials from the North, would be the same as it has been in public.

"So we're actually thinking about Fourth of July, Pennsylvania Avenue, having a really great parade to show our military strength", Trump said months after his Paris experience.

The plan was first revealed by the Washington Post, before being confirmed by the White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders. I think a lot of the world remembers the Soviet May Day parades and they still see the North Korean military parades around Pyongyang.

It's premature to attach a dollar figure without knowing the scope of the parade, but for comparison's sake, the last military parade in the US, which followed the Iraq War, cost $13.8 million (adjusted for inflation.) That's a lot of money to spend on something just because the president thinks it would be cool.

Mayor Muriel Bowser's communications director, Anu Rangappa, told Washingtonian that the mayor's office will have "more to say when formal outreach begins", but until then, "we do know that just like the wall, he will have to pay for it".

The last USA military parade was in 1991 under George HW Bush, and celebrated the victory over Iraq and the liberation of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.

"I think confidence is silent and insecurity is loud", Kennedy told reporters.

After the video began circulating Facebook , several law enforcement agencies throughout the country began investigating. A viral video that appears to depict child pornography has caught the attention of law enforcement in Maryland.

In January a year ago, the newly appointed Trump administration was contemplating having a "Red Square/North Korea-style parade" for the inauguration, a source revealed to The Huffington Post.

The Senate Democratic whip, Dick Durbin of IL, said he wouldn't attend such a parade.

The parade in the nation's capital cost $8 million, according to CNBC, which adjusted in today's dollars would be around $13.8 million. In fact, when you think about any national military parade you can imagine, don't you offer up at least a little snicker?

"It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen".

White House officials on Wednesday defended the proposed military celebration.

"And he wants to hold a parade?"
