We're still more than a month away from when the Kansas City Chiefs can officially trade Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. Apparently, that might not happen. The Redskins wouldn't be able to trade Cousins until he signed the tag, but he would still take up $34.5 million in cap space, which would cripple the Redskins in free agency.

There is some inherent risk with this move, though.

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Redskins are considering using the franchise tag for a third time on Cousins.

If the Redskins placed the tag on Cousins it would mean that they are on the hook or $34 million.

IOC's doping policy in turmoil as 28 Russians have bans lifted
Abuja - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS ) has overturned the Olympic doping bans on 28 Russian athletes . Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the CAS ruling.

Cousins' camp could always tell possible trade partners that he won't sign a long-term deal with them either, choosing to hit free agency in 2019.

Washington has the clock starting on February 20th to decide if they want to take this into consideration or just take a loss and take their chances in the National Football League draft ot free agency.

Teams can begin utilizing the franchise tag on February 20.

Cousins could also agree to the franchise tag, but then make it very hard for another team to trade for him - either by making exorbitant extensions demands or flat-out saying he won't play there beyond 2018. But they're apparently considering it. Buckle up, National Football League fans. However, Cousins has indicated that money won't be the factor that helps him to make up his mind. The Redskins retained Cousins with the franchise tag the past two offseasons.

NFL Network reported that Smith will sign a four-year extension worth $94 million with $71 million guaranteed, which essentially locks him in as the starter.

The transition tag is much like the non-exclusive franchise tag.

"At the end of the day, I want to win", Cousins said Friday.

Without a franchise tag, Cousins is expected to draw interest from a number of teams, including several that are selecting in the top 15 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Syrian peace conference delegates announce progress in Sochi

Cousins said he did hear this week from coach Jay Gruden about the Redskins' approach to the Smith trade. So maybe he wouldn't delay signing the tag's tender. It looks like I'm going to be a free agent on March 14. But the decision is a gamble - and one that could easily backfire.
