Amazon's Alexa Can Now Send SMS Messages To Phones

Amazon says Alexa will then "find the best way to send the message".

You can now use Amazon's Alexa to send SMS messages. The first time you open the app following the update, you will receive a prompt explaining the new text feature. Then tap "Contacts" and "My Profile" then toggle the "Send an SMS" button to turn on the feature. However, you can ask Alexa to send "a text", as that will command her to send SMS messages to your contacts. Users can now ask Alexa to simply send a text message, and the voice assistant will do the rest.

Previously Echo could send a text-based message to a user, but the sender and the receiver both needed to be running the Alexa app and have an Echo device.

These are real text messages sent through your Android phone to other phones (doesn't matter what type) and not messages sent through the Alexa app. Maybe, Amazon will launch such features in the Indian market when it believes that Indian users are ready for using a smart speaker.

US users can even bolt a full home service to Alexa, and it surely won't be long before the same is true here. As of publication time, the company hasn't provided details about when global users might be able to send SMS messages or if Alexa will be able to read incoming messages.

The new feature works on any Amazon devices only support Alexa texting and calling, but seemingly it can't work on any third-party Alexa speakers.
