Explosions and Gunfire Heard Near Kabul's Main Military University

The Afghan security forces have cordoned off the whole area as the attack is still ongoing.

The assault was the latest in a wave of relentless militant attacks in Kabul this month by the Taliban and rival Islamic State militants that have killed scores and left hundreds wounded. "The last attacker is still clashing with security forces", Waziri said, adding that "two security force members were also killed and 10 others were wounded".

"One bomber detonated himself and another bomber was detained by our forces".

Earlier today, Afghan Presidential Spokesman Shahhussain Murtazawi said that the attackers have been restricted to the first gate of the academy.

That attack was claimed by the local Taliban militant group. Security warnings sent to foreigners in recent days said IS militants were planning to attack supermarkets, hotels and shops frequented by foreigners.

News agency AFP cited a police spokesman confirming rocket and gunfire but saying it was now calm.

A series of explosions and a gunfire have been reported in the area of a military academy in Afghanistan's capital, Sputnik reported.
