The 18-year-old's body was found off Cedar Villa Estates Road, just southwest of Saskatoon, on March 25, 2015.

The belt Antoine was wearing in the selfie, posted online hours before Gargol was found dead, was eventually found near Gargol's body, leading it to become a key piece of evidence in Antoine's prosecution.

Cheyenne Rose Antoine had uploaded a photo of the 18-year-old victim Brittany Gargol right before she was strangled.

Antoine has been sentenced to seven years in prison, the term was shortened after a guilty plea from Antoine, who showed remorse for her actions.

Initially, Antoine contacted police and said she was with the victim the night she died, but left her friend at The Lighthouse bar to visit her uncle.

Brittney Gargol's murder isn't the first time Facebook has influenced a murder case. Authorities arrested Antoine after realizing she was wearing a belt that matched the one discovered near Gargol's body.

In a statement released through her legal representative, Antoine said: 'I will never forgive myself. A series of tips later led police to a witness who said Antoine had admitted arguing with Gargol and choking her. CBC, however, reported that the convict could not remember strangling her friend and killing her.

A person had approached the Gargol family to tell them about an alcohol-fueled rant that included Antoine's confession that she had a fight with Gargol and choked her, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix reported. The last person known to have seen her alive was her close friend Cheyenne Rose Antoine.

"Most days we can't stop thinking about Brittney, what happened that night, what she must have felt fighting for her life", Jennifer Gargol said. Instead, Antoine pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and faces a 7 year sentence.

In court Monday, the victim's aunt gave an emotional impact statement, reports the Toronto Sun. I am very, very sorry ... "It shouldn't have ever happened".

The photo was not the only evidence prosecutors presented to undermine Antoine's stories about her actions on that fateful day.
