Wall 'Must' Be Part of Any DACA Deal

Trump last year ended a program championed by former president Barack Obama that protected from deportation 690,000 or more young immigrants who years ago were brought illegally into the U.S.by their parents.

"We want to have a DACA compromise", the Wisconsin Republican said at a GOP leadership press conference, referring to the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program created by President Obama.

The top Democrat in the House of Representatives, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, told reporters Monday, "I think we will" reach an agreement on the young immigrants, mainly because neither Democrats nor Republicans want a partial government shutdown at the end of next week.

The president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is calling on Congress to overhaul immigration laws so protect more than 1 million immigrants now allowed to work in the United States but are at risk of losing their status. That judge also said that lawyers have a strong chance of succeeding at trial as the underlying case is still playing out.

Congress must separate "the conversation about DACA" from the "larger issues" about USA immigration policy, because allowing the program to expire will lead "to a humanitarian crisis", especially in Los Angeles, said Archbishop Jose H. Gomez.

Thomas Donohue says a White House meeting Tuesday on immigration is a "good start" even if "I am not sure we agree on exactly what we would like to do". And, if Republicans can convince Trump to accept more money for border security overall as a win on the wall.

President Trump said it again Wednesday, but this time in no uncertain terms: There must a border wall as part of any legislation to extend temporary legal status for immigrants who arrived in the United States as children.

The White House has since issued a correction that now includes Trump's words on the matter.

Late yesterday, US District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco ruled that DACA must remain in place while the litigation is resolved.

The Department of Justice has said federal government is acting within its authority to wind down the program.

Sanders called the decision "outrageous, especially in light of the President's successful bipartisan meeting with House and Senate members at the White House" on immigration reform on Tuesday. In exchange, Trump and Republicans want toughened border protections and tightened restrictions on others trying to migrate to this country.
