Big Tech Teams Up in Fight to Restore Net Neutrality

Senator Brian Schatz a Democrat from Hawaii has said he's hopeful that a new generation of voters who care about the internet will see net neutrality as their defining issue, much like members of the National Rifle Association, who support the Second Amendment.

Last month, the FCC voted along party lines to eliminate its 2015 net neutrality rules. Under the terms of the CRA, the Senate has 60 days from when the FCC passed the rule to review it. In order to overturn the FCC's net neutrality decision, it would need a majority of senators and members of the House of Representatives to vote in favor of the resolution.

The lobby group for some of the most powerful USA tech firms said it would join the legal challenge to the planned rollback of "net neutrality" rules requiring internet service providers to treat all online traffic equally.

The draft goes on to argue that "ISPs have strong incentives to preserve Internet openness, and these interests typically outweigh any countervailing incentives an ISP might have" furthering its argument for a light-touch approach to internet legislation.

The state-by-state legislation being introduced could become the subject of a second net neutrality-related lawsuit. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln, would bring net neutrality rules power to the state level.

"The final version of Chairman Pai's rule, as expected, dismantles popular net neutrality protections for consumers".

Open internet defenders in the Senate reached an "important milestone" on Monday when Sen.

Morfeld announced his intention to introduce the bill shortly after the Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 along party lines to repeal the Obama-era regulations on December 14. Before the commission voted on the repeal, some of America's biggest tech companies, Facebook and Google in particular, took a back seat during public protests over the issue.

Netflix also followed up with an aggressive back neck to the FCC, posting to Twitter, "In 2018, the Internet is united in defense of #NetNeutrality".

The battle over net neutrality has raged for over a decade in the FCC and the courts, with both sides contending they represent "internet freedom". But California legislators are seeking to thread the needle by forcing telecom companies to agree to net neutrality rules as a condition of accessing utility poles, which are owned by the state.

If you care about a free internet, now is the time to act.
