Alan Shearer has slammed the £75 million transfer that will bring Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool in January, claiming the defender is not worth that kind of fee.

Southampton were furious with Liverpool's conduct at the time, demanding a public apology from their Premier League rivals, but tensions have thawed and a move is expected to be completed as early as next week.

The 26-year-old has endured a hard season at St Mary's Stadium but nonetheless insists he will "always be indebted" to his old club after spending more than two years on England's south coast.

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic during September 2015 and under the terms of that transfer the Scottish club are set to receive a sell-on fee in the region of £S7.5million ($NZ16 million).
