Nazareth, the Israeli Arab city where Jesus is thought to have been raised, will celebrate Christmas as usual, its mayor said, denying the festivities would be curtailed in protest at the USA decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"Our identity and faith aren't up for debate", Salam said. "The decision has taken away the joy of the holiday, and we will cancel the festivities this year", Salam reportedly said. Christmas events in the city, which is a center of Christian pilgrimage, normally provide a big boost to its economy.

Mayor Ali Salam says the town has canceled the events it had planned for the holiday, such as a Christmas market, .

When Trump announced the decision he reiterated his commitment to peace in the Middle East, noting the previous policy of not recognizing "the reality" that Jerusalem is Israel's capital brought us "no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians". The imposing Basilica of the Annunciation in central Nazareth is built on a site which many Christian faithful believe was the childhood home of Jesus's mother, Mary.

"Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel's capital", Mr Trump said in a speech in the White House last week.

Jerusalem is sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims and is a contentious part of Israel-Palestinian negotiations.

The announcement to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem was, meanwhile, hailed by other groups, including 250 prominent Israeli rabbis who issued Trump the biblical blessing that God gave to Joshua.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, welcomed Trump's decision as "a new and genuine milestone in the glorious history of this city".

The recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital by Trump sparked a wave of outrage in the Arab world, even though he still signed a six-months waiver which has delayed the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem since a 1995 Congress vote in favor of the move.

Many Israeli leaders support Trump's decision, claiming that Jerusalem is the undivided capital of Israel.
