President Obama meets with President-elect Donald Trump. His business dealings and foreign interactions have made him a central focus of Mueller's investigation. Revelations about the phone calls ended with Flynn's unceremonious resignation in February, less than a month after taking his post as National Security Advisor.

"After over 33 years of military service to our country, including almost five years in combat away from my family, and then my decision to continue to serve the United States, it has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months of false accusations of "treason" and other outrageous acts", Flynn wrote in the Friday morning statement.

The Special Counsel's probe has found illegal behavior stretching into the senior most levels of the White House. Mueller has already indicted Manafort, Trump's campaign manager, and Gates, his deputy campaign manager and a longtime Manafort associate, on charges involving money laundering and other offenses, and it's not known whether Manafort and Gates might also decide to tell all to Mueller in exchange for a deal.

The charges against Flynn were brought on by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that Russian Federation may have had a hand in tampering with last year's presidential election. The White House has denied that assertion.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) spoke to reporters this afternoon after the announcement that Gen. Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Flynn denies that he discussed US sanctions against Russian Federation with Kislyak.

He was forced to resign in February after misleading the White House about meeting the Russian ambassador before Trump took office.

Mueller's charging documents state bluntly that Flynn interfered with the FBI's inquiry into Trump-Russia collusion. Trump, who publicly fretted about his desire to have Mueller wrap up his investigation sooner rather than later, and who supposedly will "blow a gasket" if he isn't exonerated by year's end, will now watch as Mueller proceeds full steam ahead, bolstered by Flynn's input. Scheduled grand jury testimony regarding Flynn was also postponed by prosecutors.
