Background checks for guns purchases set Black Friday record

That's about 17,000 more requests than it received on Black Friday in 2015 and 2016, and both those years were previous record-breakers.

Sweaters, TVs and slippers have always been hot items on Black Friday.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased.

The number of background checks isn't directly linked to the number of guns sold.

Black Friday has always been a popular day for deals - not just on electronics, clothes and appliances, but also semi-automatic rifles and handguns from local gun shops. The bureau fielded 203,086 background check requests for gun purchases on the day after Thanksgiving-the highest daily total ever, reports USA Today.

"One could think they were going to purchase a gun and decide not to purchase a firearm or they could maybe purchase two on an approval, for example", Plessinger continued.

Friday's background checks record come in the wake of recent mass shootings in this country - including deadly massacres in Las Vegas and at a Texas church.

Donald Trump's pro-gun presidency has contributed to a slowdown in sales this year.

The shootings have prompted lawmakers to introduce new legislation that would limit the sale of certain firearms or accessories, although no new laws are expected to be signed any time soon.

The FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) database system said they fielded 203,086 background checks on Black Friday, a day when USA retailers mark down prices on their products to kick off the annual holiday gift-shopping period.

That review was motivated by the Texas church shooting where court-martialed Air Force veteran Devin Kelley was able to purchase the rifle used to kill 25 people inside the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
