DPS trooper shot dead near Dallas, suspect in custody

The suspect was arrested in Waller County later that night and faces a capital murder charge.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says 41-year-old Trooper Damon Allen was killed Thursday following a traffic stop on Interstate 45 near Fairfield, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Dallas.

"Suspect in today's fatal TXDPS trooper shooting in Freestone County has been captured in Waller County near Prairie View", the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management said in a statement.

DPS said Black, of Lindale, Texas, fled the scene in a auto and was spotted about three hours later more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Fairfield, in Waller County.

According to the Waller County Sheriff's Office, the suspect, Dabrett Black, exchanged shots with deputies in Waller County near Liendo Parkway and Wyatt Chapel and fled on foot Thursday evening. He left the scene of the shooting in a gray Chevrolet Malibu with the license plate number JDN4273. Officials urge anyone who sees this man to contact law enforcement and do not approach him.

A call to a court-appointed attorney representing Black in the Smith County charges was also not immediately returned Friday. The trooper died at the scene.

The $500,000 bond is for two charges, Assault of a Public Servant, and Evading arrest.
