It's only the latest in a long string of maladies that have torpedoed the career of the 2010-11 NBA MVP and, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarkowski and Dave McMenamin, has him thinking hard about his future. Rose, who signed with Cleveland in the offseason to become part of LeBron James' supporting cast, has been inconsistent as he continues to battle injuries, and the setbacks reportedly are weighing on him.

"He's exhausted of being hurt and it's taking a toll on him mentally", a source told ESPN.

Rose is averaging 14.3 points on 47% shooting this season for the Cavaliers, and playing 27 minutes a game when healthy as the team awaits the return of newly acquired All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas.

Wojnarowski also reported that the sharp decline in Rose's career has taken a mental toll on the 29-year-old.

A team source tells ESPN: "He's exhausted of being hurt and it's taking a toll on him mentally".

Cavaliers injured point guard Derrick Rose was excused from the team to express a personal matter and could be considering retirement.

When you consider that Rose has played in just 237 out of a possible 412 regular-season games since tearing his ACL in the 2012 playoffs, it's understandable why Rose might be discouraged.

The Cavaliers won six straight games despite not having Rose heading into their home game against Charlotte on November 24. However, they appear to be playing better without Rose and may not miss his contributions. Last season, Rose no-showed a game for the New York Knicks, later citing "a family issue" as the reason for his absence.

Before the National Basketball Association season began, Derrick Rose was going to be the fill-in until Isaiah Thomas returned to the court.
