26 feared dead in Vijayawada boat tragedy

At least 16 people were killed and seven more are missing after an overloaded boat capsized on a river in India, police said.

According to initial reports, the boat belonging to Simple Water Sports, a private agency, was ferrying tourists from Bhavani Island - a popular tourist spot - to Pavitra Sangamam, where the Godavari joins the Krishna on the outskirts of Vijayawada. Another three passengers were rescued by the teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) late in the night. Sources told New Indian Express that 15 people have been recovered so far while 10 others are still feared missing.

This incident comes after 22 people died after a boat capsized on Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat.

The boat exceeded its maximum carrying capacity of 24. As many as 20 passengers wearing life jackets were brought ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen.
