The Starbucks Red Cup Isn't Red This Year, So Cancel the Holidays

While Starbucks' seasonal cups from years' past have been red, this year's 20th anniversary design is a bit different.

In a press release, Starbucks creative director Leanne Fremar said, "This year's cup is intentionally created to encourage our customers to add their own color and illustrations". Taking a cue from customers who had been using their cups as a canvas, previous year Starbucks red cups featured 13 different designs created by customers.

It's officially the most wonderful time of the year! The design features a white cup with an illustration of hands holding red cups to honor years past. The coffee giant is hoping the cup design will encourage customers to color and personalize the cups on their own.

In 2017, for the first time in memory, the cups aren't red.

Starbucks' annual holiday cups have become something of a tradition marking the start of the unofficial holiday season on November 1.

"I liked the idea of hands as the centering point, a symbol of connection, love and giving joy", said Kay. 'Whether it's wrapping presents or decorating a tree, writing cards or enjoying a mug of cocoa'.
