Amazon Key unlocks your door for in-home package deliveries

The new Amazon Key system allows delivery personnel to drop off packages inside Prime members' homes, providing "secure home access" when the homeowner is not available.

In a move aimed at protecting packages from would-be thieves, Amazon is rolling out a security camera/smart lock bundle that would allow deliveries to be left inside the home.

The service uses a kit, that start at $249.99, which includes an Amazon security camera, the Cloud Cam and a compatible smart lock. Some customers think so after the online retailer announced its newest product today: "Amazon Key".

When the delivery person arrives, they will knock, and then scan the package to a Wi-Fi connected lock.

If no one answers, the delivery person swipes a button in the app that sends a message up to the cloud, which sends a message down to the customer's Amazon-enabled smart lock. All of this is done through an encryption process, and once the process is complete, the Cloud Cam begins recording, and the door is unlocked for the employee to enter. You can give friends or family temporary, recurring, or permanent access to your home and also allow other service employees, such as dog walkers, cleaners, and others, into the home on certain dates and times. Note, only Prime-eligible items can be delivered in-home.

Reuters reports Key systems will be available to Amazon Prime members in 37 locations nationwide starting in November 8, but New Orleans is not yet on the list. They also plan to vet their carriers with background checks and driving record reviews. Amazon handles entry to your home so the driver never gets a key or access code to your home.
