Johnston police were asked to perform a child welfare check at home of 30-year-old Erin Lee Macke last Thursday, Sept. 21.

He says that the children had been left alone for 24 hours before police went to Macke's apartment after 7 p.m. on September 21 and found her 12-year-old twins and two younger daughters, ages 6 and 7, home alone.

She didn't plan to return until October 1, but as soon as police learned of the incident they contacted her in Germany and demanded she return to the US immediately. She made no arrangements to provide supervision of the children while she was away, according to police.

Macke was also charged with making a firearm available to a person under 21, according to the statement.

The mother is being held without bond in the Polk County Jail.

"I've never heard of anything like this before", Johnston police Lt. Tyler Tompkins told CBS affiliate KCCI.

Macke is next due to appear in court on October 9. Police said the last charge was recorded in light of the fact that a gun was left at home inside the kids' span.

But authorities ordered her to return much sooner - when they learned that she had left four young children behind.
