Pope prays for victims of Mexico quake

The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter was in Puebla state, about 120 kilometers southeast of Mexico City.

At around 1PM local time on Tuesday, a 7.1 magnitude natural disaster hit Mexico.

"Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives, including boys and girls in schools, buildings and homes", announced Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Rescue workers are continuing to scrabble through rubble, searching for survivors, including dozens of children feared buried beneath a Mexico City school. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto personally visited the site, saying 20 children and two adults were killed. He said the priority is to provide medical care to the injured and rescue people still trapped in the rubble. The quake, measuring 7.1, caused extensive damage in Mexico City and in neighbouring states.
