This morning, Amazon said it is seeking proposals from cities and states in North America for a second headquarters.

United States web giant Amazon announced plans on Thursday to open a second headquarters somewhere in North America that will accommodate up to 50,000 employees and cost $5 billion to build and operate.

Amazon has announced plans to invest United States dollars 5 billion in a second headquarters in the US. "The @CityofMemphis has so much to offer!" after the news of the second headquarters was announced. The company is one of the biggest employers in Seattle, on course to have 10 million square feet (929,000 square meters) of office space, more than 15 percent of the city's inventory.

Officials in the Baltimore metro area are also gearing up to pursue the possibility of landing Amazon's second headquarters.

Amazon said earlier that it planned to expand its footprint in Seattle to 12 million square feet by 2022.

The initiative is being dubbed "HQ2" and has many investors and Amazon enthusiasts wondering which city will host the new facilities.

Dallas said it has already contacted Amazon to express its interest. The company said it is looking for urban centers with a strong university presence, a highly skilled workforce and a stable business climate, and wants to build somewhere with access to public transportation.

Toronto's Mayor John Tory said in a statement that the city is a "prime candidate" for Amazon's second headquarters.

There are some other desires that Amazon has for the location of HQ2, but the company said they wouldn't make or break a deal.

Amazon HQ2 will house 50,000 employees. "The "prize" is tremendous if any city/state is able to land Amazon, given its commitment to 50,000 new jobs and $5bn of investment in the HQ2", she said. Amazon is also giving executives the option to choose where to base their teams - in HQ2, Seattle, or split between both locations. While big USA metro areas like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Austin immediately come to mind - what about a bustling tech center to the north?

Proposals are being requested by October 19, and Amazon indicated it would make a decision on the location sometime next year.
