Sep 3, 2017; New York, NY, USA; Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic (L) shakes hands with Garbine Muguruza of Spain (R) on day seven of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"I will try my best".

Kvitova suffered a career-threatening injury to her left playing hand, when an intruder stabbed her at her home in December but she has been recovering faster than expected.

On Sunday night on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Muguruza came out firing and built a 4-1 lead over Kvitova.

Froome moves a minute clear in La Vuelta
Russia's Ilnur Zakarin came second, 36 seconds behind, with Dutchman Wilco Kelderman third and Froome coming in fifth. Monday is the second rest day for the three-week race, which heads north on Tuesday with an individual time trial.

But the two-time Wimbledon champion was satisfied with her performance, saying: "I feel great, of course". I'm sorry, I'm not sorry I beat her.

Kvitova was the more powerful player, standing 6-foot and with a strong southpaw serve, but she got just 55 percent of her first serves in and made 42 unforced errors.

"I don't think I can find the right words, it was a hard time, all five months (away) were very tough".

Muguruza seemed back on track in the second set when she broke in the first game but Kvitova grabbed it back and cantered to a 4-1 lead as the Spaniard was given a warning for coaching. Neither of them has been great in NY, with Kvitova reaching the quarterfinals once, and this being Muguruza's first 4th Round.

Targeting her opponent's misfiring forehand, Kvitova leveled to 4-4 and had break points at 5-4 and 6-5 before sealing the tiebreak. Not only a tournament, but the summer in general.

"We'll see", Muguruza said, smiling. The pair have met three times and Kvitova has won twice. Their most recent match, a third-round encounter at Wimbledon in 2014 that Kvitova won, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-5, is considered one of the best women's matches of the past decade.

But now she's in the quarters here, and hasn't dropped a set. "The world we live in is just shocking. She played very good". "To be able to come out here and do what she needs to do, to clear her head, it's such a handsome thing to see".
