Fire broke out around a major freeway in the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles on Friday (Sept 1) afternoon, forcing the shut down of a 20.9km stretch of the roadway and threatening nearby homes.

Temperatures reached 106 degrees around the fire while gusts of wind blasted over ridge tops at up to 50 miles per hour, said Carol Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations have continued, with 730 homes evacuated across Burbank, Glendale, and the city of L.A., according to CBS.

"This is a slow burning, "backing" fire (meaning it burns down hill) and we have resources at the base of the hills to defend homes", fire spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said in a statement.

Two were homes and one may have been a shed. Evacuation orders were issued to hundreds of homes in the path of the fire as firefighters, fire helicopters and Super Scooper planes worked to contain the blaze.

"Due to erratic fire behavior, driven by strong, gusting winds, we are not able to give a firm prediction on all areas potentially at risk", the department said.

No injuries have been reported, officials said.
