A tropical storm will pass by the coast of North Carolina early this week, but the rain and wind will stay well offshore. Its forward speed was detected at 10 miles per hour toward the north-northwest.

However, a turn to the north and eventually northeast is forecast to begin tonight, which should steer the storm away from the U.S.

Forecasters give the disturbance a 40 percent chance of developing into a tropical system during the next couple of days and a 60 percent chance of formation by the middle of next week. The Invest then encountered more favorable conditions with less wind shear and dry air over the weekend, allowing it to strengthen to Depression Eight Saturday night, and then into a weak tropical storm on Sunday.
