Tropical Storm Franklin Develops

Tropical Storm Franklin continues to strengthen this morning with deep convection continuing to wrap around the low-level center.

"Some slow development of this system is possible during the next several days while it moves generally west-northwestward across the tropical Atlantic at about 15 miles per hour", the NHC reported.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: 'Belize and the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula should expect rainfall to begin midday Monday with rainfall spreading inland through the day.

Franklin would be the first named storm to reach hurricane strength during the 2017 season, USA Today reported.

If maximum sustained winds reach a speed of 74 miles per hour, Franklin would be reclassified as a Category 1 hurricane, something forecasters expect will happen before it makes landfall.

The Atlantic disturbance has been downgraded to a 50% chance of developing over the next five days. The system is not well organized, but development is possible as it travels across the open Atlantic. Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance aircraft are scheduled to fly over the system Monday.

Meteorologist Ed Vallee compared Franklin to Hurricane Earl, which struck the Yucatan in August 2016 and resulted in a state of emergency in Quintana Roo. Another system in the central Atlantic has about a 20 percent chance of becoming a named storm and could impact the eastern Caribbean later this week.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs until November 30. It could be a hurricane as it hits Mexico for the second time near Tampico.
