It's understood the Copa Airlines Flight, from Panama City, was waiting on the tarmac to head to a gate when the incident occurred.

A teenager detained Tuesday after opening an emergency exit and jumping from a plane after it landed at San Francisco International Airport was released by Customs and Border Protection later that day and turned over to San Francisco police.

According to witnesses, the young man quickly and suddenly popped open the emergency door, slid down the plane's wing and hit the ground and started running.

The 17-year-old, a USA citizen, removed the door minutes after the Copa Airlines flight arrived from Central America, San Francisco Airport spokesman Doug Yakel said. The teen will also be transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. He was then hospitalized, and an SFO spokesperson says he was uninjured and the runway was not affected in anyway. According to the passengers, the boy seemed too anxious and fidgety throughout the flight. "And then this guy, I see him jump on the wing and then he starts climbing down the wing and then he just runs".

Passenger Isaac Rodrigues said a flight attendant used her body to block the gap where the door had been until the plane was at the gate. The passenger has been taken into custody by law enforcement.

A crew member shut the door, and the plane taxied to its gate where everyone safely got off, the Panama-based COPA said in a statement.
