According to the Japanese media, Toyota is on-track to deliver the solid state batteries in electric cars by 2022, increasing range and reducing charge time. This will thus be a long-range fast-charging electric vehicle.

Toyota has only recently expressed interest in pure electrics, as opposed to plug-in hybrids, but a new report says the auto giant is planning to leapfrog early electric vehicle leaders by debuting an EV with all-solid-state batteries by 2022.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 shines in new renders
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is highly-anticipated given the smartphone could be a come-back Note-series smartphone for the company. What does that hint at? Samsung has officially confirmed the release date of its next flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 8.

Toyota isn't alone in racing toward solid-state batteries: Hyundai has shown interest in developing and commercializing this technology too. Plus solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes than than liquid ones, which make them safer than lithium-ion batteries.

But despite apparent antipathy to EVs, Toyota was hedging its bets by waiting for battery technology to be good enough to take away range anxiety, and deliver charging times you could actually live with in the real world. The auto maker said that it's near a breakthrough in production engineering that could help it put the new tech in production electric vehicles as early as 2020, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The company is reportedly planning to begin mass producing electric vehicles in China as early as 2019. These "solid-state" batteries are also rumored to charge in a few minutes, as opposed to the 30 minutes most of today's EVs take to top off.

The company that created the immensely popular Prius is late to the EV game, but it will be welcomed with open arms if it brings a solution to two of the segment's biggest limitations.
