Americans Are Getting Tired of Michael Bay's Transformers Films

American film company Paramount's new film "Transformers: The Last Knight" nabbed the top spot at the North American box office with an over 690-million USA dollar debut. That includes a Friday-Sunday take of $45.3 million.

The fifth installment in the series, directed by Michael Bay, brought in an estimated 45.3 million US dollars in North America Friday through Sunday and a five-day total of 691 million USA dollars since its opening last Wednesday, according to studio figures collected by comScore. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (2011) grossed $41.4 million on its Wednesday launch, and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" opened with $73.5 million. As of Sunday, the film's global haul sits at $196.2 million after rolling out in 41 markets worldwide, spearheaded by $123.4 million coming from China alone.

Not only is the film the lowest debuting film of the series but with this debut it might not even be in the top 10 grossing films of 2017 in the US. Imax theaters contributed $24.3 million.

The Last Knight ends with Quintessa being destroyed by Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, her body flung off the spaceship the Decepticons and Autobots have been fighting on.

Disney Pixar's Cars 3 earned another $25.2 million and has grossed more than $100 million at the domestic box office. It's now surpassed Man of Steel's final domestic box office numbers and is still going strong.

The culture clash romantic comedy, based on the real-life story of the film's star Kumail Nanjiani and co-writer, opens in NY and Los Angeles before going wide in the coming weeks.
