With the creation of the Las Vegas Knights, each of the current 30 National Hockey League teams were required to submit a list of players (either seven forwards, three defense men and one goalie or eight skaters and one goalie) to protect from being drafted in the expansion draft.

Nashville GM David Poile said he has spoken with McPhee and that the Predators "will do the best we can to protect as many assets as we can".

Other notable forwards left unprotected were: Minnesota center Eric Staal, a nine-time 20-goal-scorer, Los Angeles forward Dustin Brown and Montreal's Tomas Plekanec.

Expansion draft trade/waiver freeze begins for all teams except Vegas Golden Knights, 3 p.m.

While that sounds kind and human, this is just a ploy for the Golden Knights to turn a player into an even bigger haul.

With that said, here's a self-induced Q & A as we move through the week.

If you can draft a player in the expansion draft that could be later flipped for draft picks (perhaps a Dan Hamhuis type from Dallas), more power to the Golden Knights.

What's uncertain is how many trades the Golden Knights will reach with teams to influence which player Vegas selects or avoids in exchange for draft picks, something McPhee hopes to stockpile.

White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on
He told senators during a committee hearing that there would have to be "good cause" for Mueller to be removed from his role. Both Gingrich and Ken Starr were closely involved in the investigation and impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

But for now it's all about mock drafts, the looming expansion draft and the NHL Awards Show that absolutely nobody is talking about with the Vegas expansion extravaganza set to overshadow the whole thing.

The team chose to protect seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie from being selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in Wednesday's draft. The Expansion Club is permitted to sign a current or pending Free Agent on a Current Club's list of Available Players during the period between 10:01 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 18, and 9:59 a.m. ET on Wednesday, June 21, and in so doing will be deemed to have made its Expansion Draft selection from such Current Club. That forced the team to also expose top-pairing blueliner Marc Methot. The Thunderbirds have signed the following seven players to AHL one-way deals: forwards Francois Beauchemin, Matt Buckles, Ryan Horvat and Anthony Greco; defensemen Matt MacKenzie and Ed Wittchow; and goaltender Evan Cowley.

Thornton had a cap hit of $6.8 million and Marleau $6.7 million in the last of three-year deals. The Wild have too many defensemen, so Jonas Brodins name has been bandied about in trade rumors, and the Ottawa Senators will have to do something because defenseman Dion Phaneuf said he wont waive his no-movement clause. He's also your expected replacement for Dominic Moore should he leave via free agency come July. I'm sure Las Vegas will explore acquiring players that they could put in the market the following week.

I know what I would do, and millions of other armchair GMs have their ideas, but what will the Stars do?

This story has been corrected by removing Red Wings defenseman Mike Green from list of unprotected players.
