After President Donald Trump's friend, Chris Ruddy, said Monday night that Trump is considering firing Mueller, Rosenstein said in a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing that Mueller can "only be fired for good cause", and it would be his job to put that good cause into writing.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy told Judy Woodruff.

The White House, however, said Trump and Ruddy have never discussed the issue.

Christopher Ruddy, chief executive of conservative group Newsmax Media, Mr Ruddy was at the White House on Monday, but United States media reported that he did not meet Mr Trump while there. "With respect to the subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

President Donald Trump is weighing firing special counsel and former FBI Director, Robert Mueller, who is pursuing the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Ruddy's speculation that Trump might fire Mueller was probably derived from Jay Sekulow's ABC interview Sunday where he said that he was "not going to speculate" on whetherTrump might order Rod Rosenstein, to fire Mueller. Gingrich said he is troubled by Democratic donations of Mueller's picks to help lead the probe.

Asked about criticisms that some of the members of Mueller's team and his ability to conduct fair investigation, Ryan said he didn't know the team but said, "I know Bob Mueller".

Criticism of special counsel Robert Mueller used to be off limits. He's bringing in some of the top prosecutors that have worked in the Justice Department.

Ruddy, who is chief executive of Newsmax Media and a member of Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, confirmed his view in a text message to The Washington Post, but he did not elaborate. Ruddy said he thought firing Mueller would be a "significant mistake".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks. Rosenstein is also the Department of Justice official who appointed Mueller as special counsel late last month.

That memo detailed a February meeting in which Trump allegedly pressed Comey to drop the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. After responding that he had not, Rosenstein reassured Shaheen of his confidence in the process. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".

Mueller was named special counsel a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who had been handling the Russian probe. "Ruddy has told friends that he went public with the Mueller story, in part, to prevent Mr. Trump from making a rash decision".
