Mr Comey has apparently spoken privately with Special Counsel Robert Mueller to work out the parameters for his testimony to ensure there are no legal entanglements as a result of his public account, CNN said.

Comey will nearly certainly not be able to discuss details of the ongoing investigation, which is now being led by a special counsel.

The White House has denied those characterizations.

He reportedly has met with Comey to discuss the probe, and Comey reportedly sought his approval to testify. Mr Comey said in July past year it was careless but not criminal.

He said: "If Jurgen Klopp had been at the club three or four years, I believe I would have been part of him delivering big trophies". "It's exciting times for the football club and that is something I wanted to be part of when I came here".

Conversely, it was known in Federal Bureau of Investigation circles that Comey was not a big fan of the president. After all, Trump's tweet days after firing Comey - "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" - ended with, that's right, a leak about Comey's interactions with Trump. Trump also mentioned potential recordings of said conversations and implied that the investigations may have played a role in his decision to oust the former FBI director (which could lead to further allegations of obstruction).

Comey was sacked as FBI Director by Trump last month.

The hearings are part of the Senate panel's probe of Russia's attempts to influence the outcome of the 2016 race for the White House.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday in a pair of missives, 'So now it is reported that the Democrats, who have excoriated Carter Page about Russian Federation, don't want him to testify.

Also on Thursday, Democrats raised more questions about contacts during the campaign between the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, and President Donald Trump's attorney general, former Sen.

'The bottom line is he's going to testify, ' a source told CNN in the only quotation in the story.

Following his dismissal, reports mounted that Trump asked Comey if he was under investigation in a separate FBI probe, and sought to have Comey end an investigation into former top administration official Michael Flynn.

"The focus of the committee's investigation is the independence of the FBI" and the events leading to Comey's firing, he wrote.
