AMD Introduces Threadripper at Computex

AMD also announced that several major OEMs are releasing new Ryzen-based systems, along with a new Ryzen-based laptop.

The company also publicly demonstrated a Ryzen mobile APU in an ultraportable design, with four cores, eight threads, and the company's Vega architecture-based graphics into a sub-15mm thickness notebook design.

AMD, which trails Intel and Nvidia in marketshare, announced ThreadRipper at its analyst day earlier this month as the chip it will aim at the high-end desktop market. We were thrilled to be joined by customers and partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to showcase their latest AMD Ryzen-powered PCs. Major Taiwanese brands such as Asrock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI will have motherboards ready when the chip ships.

Processing power comes courtesy of AMD's Ryzen lineup, which offers three chips for the new ROG Strix: a Ryzen 7 1700, a Ryzen 5 1600, or a Ryzen 3 1200.

While I think we were all hoping for a much strong Radeon RX Vega video card reveal, all we got was demos of a 4 card Radeon Instinct look at rendering on a Threadripper machine, and look at Radeon RX Vega "CrossFire" running Prey at 4K. But coming so close to the Ryzen launch, it doesn't sound like it'll be radically different. AMD's first promising product in the server space in almost half a decade will be launching on June 20. This is AMD's entry into the high-end desktop (HEDT) market with its new Threadripper CPU range.

At Computex on Tuesday AMD showed off Ryzen ThreadRipper and its new Naples EPYC CPU for datacenter equipment, which is launching on June 20.

AMD stopped short of confirming important details about ThreadRipper, such as its clock speed, price or release date, beyond repeating it will be out "this summer". Ryzen Threadripper will feature 16-cores and 32-threads and it will utilize the new X399 platform and LGA socket. The Radeon RX Vega, which is more geared toward gaming workloads, is expected to launch at SIGGRAPH 2017 in Los Angeles later this year. AMD did however release some extra information but it wasn't what people wanted to AMD has just announced that the new vega cards will be released at SIGGRAPH that is being held from July 30th to August 3rd.
