The information on Monday, from officials who requested anonymity in order to disclose the private conversation, came hours before former acting Attorney General Sally Yates was to testify to Congress about concerns she raised to the Trump administration about contacts between Flynn and the Russian ambassador.

Spicer called former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates - who warned the White House on January 26 about Flynn's conversations with Russia's ambassador, Sergey Kislyak - a "political opponent of the president".

"President Obama made it known that he wasn't exactly a fan of Gen. Flynn's", White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.

Instead, Trump chose to play up former director of national intelligence James Clapper's acknowledgement during the same hearing that he was not aware of any evidence of collusion between the president and Russian Federation, which American intelligence has concluded tried to sway the United States election in Trump's favor. Yates detailed her own warnings to the Trump White House about Flynn, including meetings with the White House counsel in which she said that discrepancies over Flynn's contacts with the Russian envoy left him vulnerable to blackmail by Moscow.

But in his most damning attempts to undercut her credibility, Spicer went so far as to call Yates a "strong supporter of Clinton" without offering any evidence.

Spicer added that he was not aware of any security restrictions placed on Flynn after the warning.

Yates explained what should have been self-evident: Not only were Pence and the American public entitled to know the truth, but the Russians also knew that Flynn had lied to the vice president - so the Russians had the goods on him.

Trump turned to Twitter to talk back after Yates' testimony Monday. It also covers the post-election time period in which Trump and his transition team made a decision to appoint Flynn as national security adviser.

Over the next several days, Yates proved that she was hostile to the President's agenda and was terminated.

What was his role at the White House in those 18 days? Yates stated that she has no way of knowing "what, if anything" was done about the matter, and that "If nothing was done, then certainly that would be concerning".

"President Obama's former Director of National Intelligence and his former acting CIA Director have both said they have seen no evidence of collusion". But President Donald Trump waited 18 days before showing Flynn the door for lying to Pence.

"I think the process worked, frankly, when you think of the time in which we had the information", Spicer said during the press briefing.

"Focus on Russians having chance to "blackmail" Flynn is misleading".

Spicer also did not reconcile the fact that Yates was right about Flynn with the fact that Trump, eventually, did fire him.

"Let's look at the timeline", Spicer said.

Yates is not on record as a vocal Clinton supporter. Was he still fulfilling his normal national security adviser duties?
