LinkedIn brings in nearly $1 billion for Microsoft

Worldwide PC shipments rose 0.6 percent in the first quarter of 2017, seeing growth for the first time in five years, market research firm IDC said earlier this month.

Microsoft's "productivity and business processes" unit saw revenue rise 22% to $8 billion.

Microsoft shares fell after the company said it reported lower-than-expected revenue, amid lighter volume of its Surface products.

LinkedIn, the professional social network acquired by Microsoft a year ago for some $26 billion, contributed revenue of $975 million.

More Personal Computing revenue slipped 7% to $8.8 billion.

PayPal struck a deal with Alphabet Inc's Google last week in a move to bring its payment wallet to brick-and-mortar stores. Today, Paypal Holdings (NASDAQ:PYPL) stock received an upgrade by Piper Jaffray Companies from Underweight to Neutral.

"Our results this quarter reflect the trust customers are placing in the Microsoft Cloud", said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in the earnings announcement.

Microsoft said it was encouraged by sales of devices from other manufacturers - revenue from sales of Windows to other manufacturers was up 5% in constant currency, ahead of the overall PC market.

Revenue of $23.6 billion, versus $23.62 expected. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Microsoft to report adjusted per-share earnings of 70 cents on $23.62 billion in adjusted revenue.

Microsoft's cloud computing services and Azure platform will improve the flow of data across the company's operations, making it easier to create and link insights related to operations and commercial activities. The software giant bought LinkedIn for $26 billion past year. The segment lost $386 million on $975 million in revenue during the quarter.

Microsoft isn't likely to break out Azure revenue until it's a larger part of the commercial cloud pie.

Revenue from Microsoft's phone business declined by $730 million, and that's not really surprising.

Like every quarter, Microsoft just reported earnings for the last quarter. Xbox software and services revenue rose by 7% (8% CC), "driven by continued adoption of digital distribution and a strong game lineup".

However, after falling by 2% last quarter, Surface revenue dropped by a massive 26% (25% CC), which Microsoft attributed to "increased price competition in the premium 2-in-1 category and product end-of-lifecycle dynamics".

The LinkedIn acquisition contributed revenue of $975M.

Gareon Conley will not attend National Football League draft
Despite Conley's denials of the allegations made against him, it could still hinder his draft stock in some sort of way. Conley's attorney, Kevin Spellacy, told WOIO-TV in Cleveland that the allegations are " ludicrous and ridiculous ".
